We had a great day at the garden on Saturday! We kicked off the workday at 9 a.m., tidying up the garden, picking produce, weed whacking (thanks Vince!) and, of course, fighting squash bugs.
Squash bugs are not to be confused with Squash Vine Borer, our pest from earlier this summer. Squash bugs are not nearly as interesting to eliminate as vine borers (no plant surgery here) but they're A LOT harder to get rid of! This is because they reproduce very, very quickly, and you pretty much have to get right on top of the problem as soon as you spot it.
Here's a link to some excellent info on these two squash pests from the National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service (ATTRA):
After the workday, we met again in the afternoon (this time with grills and covered dishes) for the annual tradition of a CAC cookout. We had a modest but good turnout despite the heat, and everyone had plenty to eat! The Wedge made a great impression on all newcomers, and the pickles we made from our garden's cucumbers were a hit!
Sorry I forgot to take pictures...maybe next time!
